The kids worked so hard to put together an amazing Open House with a Texas Theme! Check it out below!
Learners are currently in the process of wrapping up our unit, How We Express Ourselves by creating a poster about a leader in history! I can't wait to see how the amazing posters turn out! We celebrated this sweet girls birthday today with a delicious cake! Happy Birthday Siena! Fourth graders did a great job performing for their parents and the school! During Maker Space this week, these boys created an Olympic Village! Love what these creative minds can do!
We are off to a great start for 2018! Learners have been working hard finishing up our current unit How We Express Ourselves! Our summative projects are in the works and I cannot wait to share their final pieces with you! We are wrapping up our text structures unit by working on sequencing on of my favorite mentor texts, A Tree Called Steve. Learners had a great time creating comics of some of their favorite texts. While learning about natural resources, we were inspired by a book called The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind to create our own windmills. Learners got the chance to create their windmill and go through a testing period to see if they were successful! Learners enjoyed being hands on and getting to experiment with their own designs. We are starting our Poetry Unit in reading this month by reading a variety of different poetry texts! Some of our favorites came from Shel Silverstein! We will continue to analyze different poems and work on adding more of the figurative language to out own writing!
Wow! It has been a busy few months in 4B! Check out all that we did! Learner's participated in the Hour of Code! They used different applications to practice coding. They were also able to reflect on their coding experiences. Maybe some of them will be engineers one day! Our door is finished and ready for the December door decorating contest! The learners had a great time brainstorming ideas and putting them into action. It definitely took some time and effort, but we love our end result! Learner's were able to practice their golf skills with Fraction Golf! They had a great time trying to roll and keep their score under par! We even had some holes in 1! Come to Texas! We created advertisements to encourage people to move to Texas! It is amazing the prices of land back in the day! The kids were amazed at how much land you can get with just a few dollars!!
It is hard to believe that October is already here. We have been busy with finishing up our first unit And settling into routines. Learners have adjusted to fourth grade quite well and we are having a great time together! Learners showed cooperation by working together to create a device that can both catch fish and catch crabs. We have been studying Native Americans in Texas and we experienced what it was like to be a Karankawa Indian of the Texas coastal Plains. 4B wore blue to bring awareness to national anti-bullying month. Working on our inference skills with an inference board game. Learners had a fun time working with each other to determine the evidence and solve the inference clues.
Time is flying by in Fourth Grade. It is hard to believe it's already September! We have been busy learning all about decimals, Native Americans, electricity and so much more! Learners comparing decimals using one of our favorite holiday candies, candy corn! While listening to a random number song, learners would write the number then use the candy corn to compare the values! It definitely was a yummy experience! Looking at number lines and determining where decimals would be located. Building circuits can be electrifying! Learners had a great time learning about what is needed for an open and close circuit. We also looked at constructing a series circuit and a parallel circuit.
We are in full swing with learning in 4B! Lot's of fun and engaging experiences to start off our first unit How We Organize Ourselves. We have been learning about the Texas Regions and what they contribute for resources. Learners created puzzle pieces about each region and shared an informational poster about what they learned! Mrs. Pickrell shared some of West Texas with us by showing what a Texas Tumbleweed looks like and the impact that it makes to the farms and ranches out west. We are looking at what tenths and hundredths look like and their value! What better way to do that then with brownies! Learners had a great time sectioning off a brownie into parts and seeing how much decimals can be worth. Learners worked in groups to activate schema on popular subjects. We talked about the importance of thinking about your schema before reading a book. By learning and reading we are adding more to our mental file cabinet for future reading. We celebrated our first 4B birthday! Happy Birthday, Lexi!!
I am so excited to begin another amazing year at Pinkerton! Teachers have been busy getting everything ready for learners to be back in class on Monday!

We saw all the different connections between producers and consumers and really saw the impact taking one out would make to the rest of the web. We spent a lot of time in the Pinkerton Patch this week investigating soils! Some master composters from Coppell Community Gardens came to show us how to start our compost piles. We are excited to watch the changes that will begin to take place. We were able to observe and investigate different types of soil. After, we developed an experiment based on the question., "Which type of soil retains water best for plants?" This week in Reading Workshop we focused on asking different types of questions when we are reading. Readers were inspired by watching Pixar short films and generating a variety of questions. We also used The Stranger to infer and ask inference questions. After we conducted our soil experiment, we created graphs to show our results. Learners were also able to draw conclusions about where the best spot would be to plant around Pinkerton. We have been writing a variety of poems using nature as our inspiration! Learners headed outside to take pictures of things outside that inspire them. We got some beautiful pictures of the natural world around Pinkerton! I scream, You scream, We all scream for ice cream!
